At Hazel Tree Lodge, life in the countryside isn’t just about slowing down, it’s about looking after the land around us.
Over the past year, we’ve taken on one of our most rewarding projects yet: planting over 3,500 trees and hedging across our farm in Derbyshire. It’s been a hands-on effort, rooted in a simple goal, to create a richer, more natural environment for wildlife, our animals, and our guests to enjoy.
What started as open fields is gradually transforming into something far more alive.
We’ve planted a mix of native trees and traditional hedgerows, carefully positioned along field boundaries and walkways. These will grow over time into natural corridors offering shelter, structure, and beauty across the land.
The work itself has been as grounding. Long days outdoors, planting by hand, and watching the landscape slowly take shape.
Why Tree Planting Matters
Planting trees on a working countryside site isn’t just about aesthetics, it’s about building a healthier ecosystem.
Our new hedgerows and trees will:
- Create habitats for birds, insects, and small wildlife
- Provide shelter for our sheep, miniature Shetlands, and horses
- Improve soil health and reduce erosion
- Help capture carbon and support long-term sustainability
In time, what we’ve planted will become part of the natural rhythm of the land blending seamlessly into the Derbyshire countryside.
Native Hedgerows: A Traditional Touch
Hedgerows are a defining feature of the English countryside, and we wanted to bring that heritage back into our land.
By planting native species hedging, we’re not just marking boundaries, we’re creating living, breathing ecosystems. As they mature, these hedgerows will become thick, wildlife-rich corridors full of birdsong, seasonal colour, and movement.
For guests staying at Hazel Tree Lodge, this means an even more immersive countryside experience.
Life on the Farm, Up Close
One of the things guests love most about Hazel Tree Lodge is feeling connected to the land.
With the new planting underway, there’s even more to experience:
- Watching the fields change with the seasons
- Spotting wildlife with Buzzards and Kestrels sometimes flying over the fields
- Seeing our animals grazing among the developing landscape
- Walking alongside newly planted hedgerows that will grow year by year
It adds another layer to your stay. Something real, evolving, and unique.
A Long-Term Vision for Hazel Tree Lodge
This isn’t a quick project — it’s an investment in the future.
The trees we’ve planted will take years to fully establish, but that’s part of the beauty of it. Each season will bring new growth, new textures, and new life to the land surrounding the lodge.
For returning guests, it means the experience will never be quite the same twice.
Staying Somewhere That’s Growing
When you stay at Hazel Tree Lodge, you’re not just booking a countryside retreat, you’re stepping into a place that’s being carefully shaped and cared for.
From your private hot tub overlooking the fields, you might notice young trees lining the edges, or new hedgerows beginning to fill out. Over time, these will frame the views, add privacy, and enhance the sense of being completely surrounded by nature.
It’s all part of creating a space where guests can truly switch off and feel connected to something bigger.
